“Fascinating, Supportive, Rewarding” – My First Three Months at Mitsubishi Chemical Group

I’m Katelyn Craig, and I joined Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG) in the Research & Development at the Wilton site. My role is my first position following graduation, and the past three months have been both challenging and rewarding as I transition my academic knowledge into a professional environment.
Which moment made you feel “I made the right choice joining”?
At the start of my second month, the site hosted a whole-site technology day. Presentations were given by people at all levels across the different teams based at Wilton. It was fascinating to gain a better understanding of the variety of roles within the site, and it clearly showed that every person’s work is valued and contributes to the bigger picture. That moment made me feel proud to be part of a company that recognizes and appreciates individual contributions.
How did your team support you in getting settled?
A lot of the equipment and knowledge in my role is very industry-specific. All the training I needed was provided, and team members have always been happy to help. I was frequently reassured that I wasn’t expected to instantly know everything. Everyone understands that learning takes time, which made me feel supported and included from the very start.
What skills do you hope to grow during your first year?
I hope to apply the skills I developed during my degree in a professional setting. In the lab, this means learning industry-specific analytical and preparatory techniques. More broadly, I aim to strengthen my soft skills, particularly communication, so I can collaborate effectively with colleagues across teams who bring a variety of skill sets and experiences.
A small gesture that made a big difference:
The team organized a welcome meal for me. It was a simple but meaningful way to get to know everyone in a more relaxed environment, and it helped me feel part of the team.
What attracted you to MCG and why did you decide to join?
As a chemist, the science was the first thing that attracted me to MCG. It was important that my role aligned with areas of chemistry that genuinely interest me. I was also drawn to the company’s focus on sustainability, especially as we move toward a greener economy. After my interview, a major reason I accepted the offer was the welcoming and friendly atmosphere I experienced—not only from my interviewers but also from team members during the lab tour. That confirmed that MCG would be a positive, supportive place to grow.
Three words to describe your first three months at MCG:
Fascinating, supportive, rewarding. These words reflect both the learning opportunities and the inclusive, empowering environment I’ve experienced so far.
