What motivated my career moves
I’ve always been motivated by challenge and making an impact. After several years as Site Director, I wanted a fresh perspective and broader experience. Moving into a commercial role pushed me outside my comfort zone, energized me, and ultimately prepared me for a General Manager position.
How I prepared for my next roles
I focused on broadening my experience beyond operations, especially in commercial and strategic areas. I actively took on challenges that stretched me and made a conscious effort to step outside my comfort zone.
When I transitioned roles, I committed to learning quickly—listening, asking questions, and building a strong understanding of the business. My operational strengths, like problem-solving and accountability, translated well and gave me a solid foundation.
By the time the General Manager opportunity came up, I had positioned myself strongly—not because I had all the answers, but because I had shown the ability to adapt and lead at a broader level.
Support I received along the way
Support has come in two complementary ways: self-awareness and strong leadership around me.
The first is taking ownership of my own development. I’ve spent time observing other leaders and learning what ‘excellent’ looks like across different areas—whether that’s strategy, communication, or performance. That reflection helped me clearly understand my own strengths and gaps, and focus my development in a deliberate way.
The second is the support from my managers. I’ve been fortunate to have leaders who challenged me, created opportunities to step outside my comfort zone, and had honest conversations about where I needed to grow.
That combination—personal responsibility supported by leaders who guide and stretch you—has been key to preparing me for broader roles.
Challenges I overcame
I see my career as a series of deliberate challenges—each one pushing me to learn, adapt, and create greater impact. That’s meant moving beyond my technical background, stepping outside my comfort zone, and letting go of stability in favour of growth. Along the way, I’ve had to close capability gaps, adapt my leadership style, stay self-driven, and overcome self-doubt.
My advice to others
Take real ownership of your development, be honest about your strengths, and where you need to grow. Be clear on where you want to go, and focus your energy on closing the gaps that will get you there.
There will be times when you draw energy from others, but also times when you have to find it within yourself—that’s where real progress happens. Most importantly, believe in yourself enough to step into opportunities before you feel fully ready—that’s how you grow.
